Since less and less chlorophyll is found in the leaf, its masking effect of the other pigments is diminished. Although the other pigments are in the leaf all year, they are now able to show their true colors. %
The carotenoids give us the hues of yellow, brown and orange. Trees with high levels of carotenoids ir$r dude hickory, sugar maple, yellow poplar, sassafras and birch.
A third group of pigments, called anthocyanins, are not present in the leaf all year. They are produced in late summer in the sap of the leaf. The anthocyanins are responsible for the colors of red, purple and blended combinations. Dogwood and scarlet oak are trees with a high level of anthocyanin pigments.
This fall when it becomes difficult to remember the difference between the carotenoid, anthocyanin and chlorophyll pigments, don’t worry —just sit back under your favorite shade tree or drive to your favorite overtook and enjoy Nature’s festival of fall colors. Nothing is nicer.
