that the arguments both for and againBt a state-run lottery in Virginia have not become as vituperative as some had predicted when the issue was sent to referendum by the General Assembly earlier this year, there has been plenty of comment on both sides.

If the conservative churches which oppose the measure are able to organize and motivate a sizeable block of voters in opposition to the lottery, that block of votes could in theory spell the difference for the referendum. Conservative coattails?

The effect of a large block of conservative voters mobilized to express their opinion against the lottery could have a spinoff which would tend to benefit the more conservative candidates running for local and state offices.
