Lee Bird: Hampton District
Mr. Bird said his campaign began six months ago with “the best way to get to know the district”: a door-to-door canvass. “I met the people and listened to their concerns. I talked to and visited with county officials (including administrators from Rappahannock’s public schools and the Piedmont Vocational Center in Culpeper).. . The message I carried to constituents was simple and straightforward: I’m working for fair, open and responsible government.”
Specifically, Mr. Bird said he is in favor of continuing the improvement of the county’s public schools “within reasonable budgetary limits”; planning ahead to meet capital needs and taking “reasonable steps” to preserve the county’s agricultural industry.
Is there a single over-riding issue? “I think so. I’ve constructed my campaign on it - fair, open and responsive government . . . There’s been somewhat of a lack of communication with the working class, with low and moderate income people. I would try to change that.”
