Fall is approaching and it is a stirs bet Jack Frost has -already begun his march south from Canada. As he heralds in this change of seasons, he brings with it a spectacular display of fall leaf coloration.
But what causes these leaves to turn brilliant shades of red, yellow, wid orange? Most everyone knows that the intensity of the fall colors varys from year to year and is weather-related. Bright days and cool, chilly nights (but not breezing) during early fall tend to favor the development of the brightest colors.
Very dry weather will usually cause leaves to turn early, whereas warm, wet weather can prolong the color peak a week or so. Weather does influence Nature’s show of colors, but there is also something very important that occurs inside each leaf.
There are two groups of pigments in a leaf that are present all year long. They are chlorophyll and carotenoids. Chlorophyll is what makes all leaves and vegetation green and is the dominant pigment. It is also the pigment that captures
