Next Tuesday, June 28, the Virginia Department of Emergency Services and Virginia Power, the licensee of the North Anna Nuclear Power Station in Spotsylvania County, will conduct a drill to test the response to a simulated emergency at the power station.
Code-named VOPEX 1-88, the Virginia Operations Plan EXercise is designed to test the readiness of the state’s emergency services network. The precise time of the drill will not be announced.
Previously, participation in the periodic exercises has been limited to the counties within a 10-mile radius of the station: Caroline, Hanover, Louisa, Orange and Spot-sylvania. This year, however, officials have expanded the drill to include any counties within a 50-mile radius.
