Senator Paul Trible has called on President Reagan to convene an anti-drug summit of Western Hemisphere heads of state to find ways to combat the international drug trade.
In a statement on the Senate floor while introducing the drug summit legislation. Sen. Trible said, “Illegal drugs threaten the well-being of every nation in the Americas. Individually we cannot meet this challenge, but collectively we can - and must - take decisive action.
“Drugs are a threat to all Americans - North and South. For example, the cocaine which becomes crack in our streets and neighborhoods is typically grown in the highlands of Bolivia and Peru. It is processed in Colombia and transhipped through Mexico and the Bahamas. It finally arrives in Virginia and the other states of our nation. Along the way it leaves a trail of illicit profits, corrupt officials, broken lives and death.
