On Saturday evening, Tammy Dwyer was crowned as the department’s carnival queen by last year’s winner, Susan Estes. First runnerup in the competition was Melissa Brown, followed by Michelle Weakley.
Also on Saturday, the winners of the department’s cash awards were announced. Richard Settle of Flint Hill went home the big winner of $1,000. Four Sperryville residents each received a check for $100: Carson Johnson, J. M. O’Bannon, Dean Atkins and Buddy Brown. A fifth $100 prize was won by Chris Berta of Amissville.
On Sunday, members of the department and the carnival workers were busy cleaning up and disassembling the rides. “We had good crowds,” Chief Lillard said, “especially Friday and Saturday nights. Almost everybody stayed late. We appreciate the support of everybody who came.”
The other volunteer firefighters gathered around nodded in agreement.
Next week, the carnival venue moves to Amissville, where Company 3 will hold its annual event on the carnival grounds beside the fire station on Rt. 211. The carnival runs from June 29 to July 2, with the firemen’s parade scheduled for Thursday, June SO, at 7 p.m., and the crowning of the carnival queen for Friday, July 1, at 11 p.m.
