Grain and Feeder Prices
The drought in the Mid-West is having a dramatic impact on com, soybean and cattle prices. As feed prices go up in the future, market feeder cattle prices are coming down. Some local cattle producers may be interested in forward pricing their feeder cattle with the Virginia Livestock Pricing Institute.
The farmer pays a “premium” up front and sets a floor price for delivery at a state-graded sale of his/her choice in the fall. If cash prices are lower than the established floor price, the Institute makes up the difference. If prices go higher than the floor, the farmer enjoys the difference.
