“State of the Craft, A Call to Conference,” the first comprehensive effort to study the craft arts in Virginia, will be held Sept. 16 and 17 at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond.
Funded in part by the Virginia Commission for the Arts and organized by the Hand Workshop with support from the Virginia Museum for Fine Arts, the conference is open to all professional artists, teachers, retailers, and others concerned with the craft industry in Virginia.
Keynote speaker will include Michael Scott, editor of the national news monthly, The Crafts Report, and William Grenewald, past executive director of the American Craft Council.
In his speech, “2001 is Only 13 Years Away,” Mr. Scott will discuss crafts in the information age. Mr. Grenewald, currently a management/marketing consultant, will address the effect of commercial success on the craft arts in “From William Morris to Philip Morris: Poetry of the Fiscal.”
Open discussions will provide a forum for the exchange of ideas on a variety of topics including:
“How can we include the craft arts in visual arts education?”
“How can we increase exhibition
Mrs. Bliss named
to dean’s list
Mrs. Beverly Bliss of Omaha was recently named to the dean’s honor list for the spring semester at the University®of Nebraska. A semester grade point average of at least 3.5 is necessary for this recognition. Beverly achieved a 3.875 GPA while pursuing a degree in elementary education. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Murphy Reid of Castleton.
