When cattle are out on pasture in the hot, humid summer months it is critical that minerals be provided to insure an adequate mineral balance in their diets. A Virginia Tech mineral mix formula that works very well for all classes of beef cattle is a mix containing 1/3 trace mineral salt, 1/3 dicalcium phosphate and 1/3 feed grate limestone.
If you are concerned about a possible selenium deficiency (which is widespread in Virginia) you can alter the mineral mix as follows: 30 percent of each of the above mentioned ingredients plus 10 percent of a 0.6 percent selenium premix. This mix will meet the selenium requirement of beef cattle as well as their other mineral requirements. Be sure to mix these ingredients thoroughly before offering them . to the cattle.
