Highway Construction
Inspector A DUTIES: Inspects assigned phases of highway and related structure construction projects for conformance with construction plans, specifications, and contract documents; and advises contractors of discrepancies. Inspects grading, landscaping, traffic control, safety devices, and detours involved in the construction project. Inspects and tests material used in construction and maintenance projects and advises contractors on the acceptability and placement of the materials, based on specifications and contract terms. Maintains construction project records and prepares timesheets, estimates, and progress reports. Monitors contractors' employment practices to ensure compliance with state and federal mandates, and prepares necessary reports. Has frequent contact with contractors, inter-departmental operating units, property owners and utility companies to facilitate completion of projects. QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of highway construction inspection techniques, methods. and procedures; knowledge of construction terms and symbols. Ability to interpret contracts, special provisions, plans, and specifications; ability to use engineering field equipment; ability to record, clearly and concisely, construction data, and to interpret and prepare reports; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with contractors and general public: ability to perform basic mathematics, including geometry. Graduation from high school with coursework in mathematics, and/or education, training, or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the work Applicants will be considered for the position at the level of Construction Inspector Trainee if the qualified applicant pool for Construction Inspector A is insufficient.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR TRAINEE: Knowledge of basic mathematics including geometry. Ability to record construction data clearly and concisely; ability to read and interpret instructional and technical manuals; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Graduation from high school, and/or education, training, or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the work. Position may rquire operating or working in the vicinity of devices emitting low-level ionizing radiation. Safety shoes required in the performance of duties. Willingness to work adjusted work schedules and overtime hours. SALARY: $16,025-$21,889 (Inspector A)
