Teachers are now studying curriculum for one section of “developmental kindergarten” for “children who are not as ready as others” to start school. A proposal will be brought back for the V board’s consideration if teachers and administrators decide it would be appropriate to implement, he said.

Youngsters in “developmental kindergarten” either progress to first grade at the end of the year or go on to traditional kindergarten.

School Board member Nancy Reeve expressed concern about putting all the children who are slower to mature into one class, adding that she didn’t want to see youngsters “tracked” or grouped entirely bj£ ability level.

“We have no intention of tracking,” Dr. Gangel replied. “We do the best we can to make sure they’re not tracked.” *

Older handicapped students classified as trainable mentally retarded (TMR) have been served at the high school in Madison while younger TMR students have attended classes at Rappahannock’s elementary, school. Dr. Gangel reported several of those younger students are ready to move up but “Madison is unable to take all the children we have, so we’re looking at options there. ”

Major changes, most of then* mandated by the state, are also coming in the Chapter I remedial classes, according to the superintend dent. He added that Robert Chap-' pell, the Title I supervisor, will, report on those changes as soon as' they’re completed.

While applauding the incorporation of the computer lab and foreign language, Chairman Beverly Massie pointed out that “the more we’re putting into the curriculum, the faster we’re moving to a seven-perkxf day. When are we going to tackl<£ that issue?” *
