Despite dire predictions of multiple casualties among the bicyclists hurtling down Route 211 at speeds in excess of 60 miles per hour, the Tour de Trump passed through Rappahannock County last Wednesday morning with nary a scrape or skid.
The only untoward moments, spectators said, came when the bikes and their support vehicles tried to negotiate the tight turn from Route 211 onto Main Street in Sperryville. Funneling across the narrow bridge over the Thornton River, bicycles and vans were crowded together, eliciting elbows and colorful expletives in a variety of languages from the world-class cyclists competing in the $200,000 inaugural tour sponsored by businessman Donald Trump.
Cresting the 2,304 foot elevation at Thornton Gap, mountain biker John Tomac of Chatsworth, California, led the field of approximately 70 professional and amateur riders. But after negotiating the chicanes and horseshoe curves down the morning side of the Blue Ridge Mountains into Sperryville, the pack had caught up with Tomac and the lead was retaken by Ireland’s Paul McCormack.
