though actually the tiny parasite feeds on many woodland mammals, including meadow voles, shrews, white-footed mice, horses and dogs.
Since Lyme disease first made its appearance, it has slowly become a household word, although many people still don’t understand the illness, its symptoms and treatment.
The deer tick, only about as big as a pinhead, is often overlooked or mistaken for a freckle. Victims often don’t realize they’ve been bitten, or they mistake the tick for a chigger bite.
The spirochete bacterium transmitted by the tick bite can manifest itself in a variety of ways in different individuals, with symptoms developing from several days to a month after the tick has attached.
The first symptom may be a reddened area on the skin where the tick attaches; the circular spot will have a raised center and a darker exterior, similar to ringworm. Other symptoms often reported by victims include fatigue, headaches, fever and chills, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea — in short, flu-like complaints.
Some patients suffer from a sore throat and dry cough, a stiff neck, chest, ear and back pains, pain in muscles and joints, swollen lymph glands, dizziness or unusual sensitivity to the sun.
Another problem with Lyme disease is its apparent ability to affect the unborn. After biting a pregnant woman, the bacterium has reportedly crossed through the placenta and infected the fetus, causing birth defects.
But, Dr. Einarson suggested, in the absence of complete answers some simple precautions will lessen the chances of people being bitten by ticks which may carry the disease.
