After these presentations the board members got the bad news from Mr. Cox. “When the budget was figured last year there was supposed to be enough for the landfill, five percent for the surplus plus another $100,000 cushion,” he said. “The cushion is gone, the five percent is gone too, plus another $100,000."
“I recommend you advertise a high rate,” Mr. Cox said. “Leave some leway in there.”
“We had a tax rate of 52 cents last year, but we expected to spend more on the landfill,” Mr. Massie said. “According to Wally’s statement last year the effective real estate tax rate would be 59 cents. When we taxed at 52 cents, we drew down the surplus by seven cents,” he added.
“It’s hard to get that across,” Col. Bingham said.
“I’m not sure it makes any difference,” Mr. Massie said. “But it’s important for people to know the supervisors haven’t run amok.”
