When the racers swept through Rappahannock County last Wednesday, few of the spectators knew what to expect. A few cyclists hiked up the mountain to claim a ringside seat for the thrilling five-mile downhill from Thornton Gap to the bottom of the mountain west of Sperryville, but most drove up, parked their cars and got out their cameras.
Though a gentle mist wet the road and the mountain peaks were obscured by low clouds, the riders seemed to have no problems with the twisting ride down to Sperryville.
• Several experienced cyclists said that the wet roads on the mountain kept the racers' speeds down somewhat from the 60-70 miles per hour predicted by the state police troopers who were assigned to escort the riders.
