The 1989 Annual Report of the Board of Trustees of the Social Security trust funds showed that the retirement, survivors and disability insurance trust funds in fiscal year 1988 increased $38.8 billion.

In the same report, the trustees predicted that in 1989 income to the trust funds would increase to $294 billion with a total payout of approximately $236 billion.
