Coach Van Horn noted that his players have been getting in some practice on their own — including a group which has been traveling to Fredericksburg to take batting practice at a private indoor facility. “They’re spending their own time and money to do that,” he pointed out.
Injuries to key players have hurt both teams as well. The softball team lost center-fielder Deena Hitt for two weeks. She will return this week, and Coach Leake is optimistic that she will spark the team.
The boys have lost senior Scott Tummeyer, possibly for the entire season, to tendonitis in his right shoulder. “He may be my permanent first base coach,” Mr. Van Horn said. “We’ll use his leadership abilities that way.”
With Tummeyer out, the team has lost one-sixth of its pitching staff, and that worries Coach Van Horn too. He planned to work his pitching staff for only partial games, particularly early in the season, but with cancellations backing up the schedule he is concerned about overworking his young pitching staff. “The lack of depth becomes a factor.”
But the coach has seen bright points out too. With Tummeyer out, Justin Ferrence stepped into the second base slot “and did a really good job. I was pleased with that.”
As of Tuesday afternoon, depending on the weather, both teams had games scheduled Wednesday afternoon at home against Page.
