basic service are network-affiliated and independent stations in Washington, Baltimore and Richmond as well as Entertainment and Sports Programming Network (ESPN), the Nashville Network, the Discovery Channel, Turner Broadcasting System’s “SuperStation” (TBS) from Atlanta, Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN), Cable News Network (CNN), Nickelodeon, Music Television (MTV), Lifetime and Black Entertainment Television (BET).
Five premium stations would also be offered: Home Box Office (HBO), the Disney Channel, Home Team Sports, Showtime and the Movie Channel. These would be offered for additional monthly fees which range from $3 for Home Team Sports to $9 for most of the others, according to the franchise proposal.
There would be other charges ranging from $2.50 per month for additional television sets, to $35 for the initial hookup. That installation charge applies to any home located within 150 feet of the transmission line. If the house is farther than that from the line the homeowner must pay an additional installation charge based on the extra distance the cable must be run.
Mr. Burke said if the franchise is granted by the county, he will hold meetings in the fire halls of the communities involved to explain how the system will work and demonstrate the equipment.
Initially cable TV would be provided in Flint Hill, Washington, Sperryville and Amissville as well as Chester Gap. Mr, Price said the service would be extended wherever adjacent areas met the requirement of 15 houses per mile, and that the standard might be changed to 10 houses per mile.
