Needs have changed but Viewtown Store still carries a variety of daily necessities — many that have not changed in decades, like livestock feed, food stuffs, gasoline, snack foods and household supplies.
Boasting the “busiest place in Viewtown,” Jodi Worley, present store manager and Verna Schmitt’s mother, said the store remains a stopping point for locals looking for a cold drink or quick snack but regular customers have made livestock feed, fertilizers, and perishable items moveable stock.
“We were sorta’ worried that local customers would not like the changes,” Mrs. Worley said, referring to the new doors, the new paint, new stock, modem equipment and facilities, “but the store has not been this busy in years.”
Blending with the “country appeal and atmosphere” are a wide assortment of items. Customers can find precisely arranged on old wooden shelves t-shirts in a variety of colors or baseball hats, seasonal items like Christmas lights, handmade quilts or baskets, hot dogs or barrels of candy, food stuffs and cleaning supplies.
And video tapes.
“Chris saw a market for video rentals out here, Mrs. Worley said, adding videos were well received by the customers, wanting not only items of necessity but also, those of leisure.
Though Chris — with a background in auto mechanics — and Verna — with several years experience with C&P Telephone Company — are new to the mercantile business, Jodi’s experience with 7-11 Stores helps them to manage the new operation.
“We really like the community,” Ms. Worley said, between checking prices for customers and talking with salesmen, waiting with pen and order form. “They really help you when they can; they work right along side you,” she concluded; adding the couple bought the first store available, wanting to get away from the hectic city life and anxious to start their own business.
“So far, it’s been nothing but fun,” Mrs. Worley said, laughing and adding with renovations and grand opening complete, things are beginning to fall into place.
“People here in Viewtown are pleased with us,” she said with pride, adding their support keeps things running smoothly.
