Board of Zoning Appeals representative to the Planning Commission Sid Gottlieb said, ‘To make it friendly and prosperous for agriculture to develop, the effort needs to be supported by making it relatively unattractive to outside land speculators. That goes hand and hand.”
“There are techniques for controlling the use of land on behalf of agriculture which have been developed nationwide,” Mr. White said.
Jackson District representative David Fannon asked how the committee proposes to survey all the farmers, and Mr. White replied that county extension agent Thomas Williams is compiling lists from his office and from the Soil Conservation Service. He said the first phase of the survey would be to approach all the farmers in a telephone survey. “Then a sampling would be selected for a more thorough followup on a face to face basis.”
The planners agreed to have a representative of the American Farmland Trust make a presentation to the commission at its May meeting and invite members of the Board of Supervisors to attend.
