The offender, Mrs. Bowen added, “has the victim totally in his power. He takes advantage of the trusting atmosphere” of a family, or perhaps as a trusted friend.
“They look like normal people,” Mr. Luke said, “but they are deceptive and manipulative. The abuse has usually gone on for years, especially if it involves family members — and they look like a model family from the outside.”
Another disturbing trend Mr. Luke has discovered during his investigations is that family members, usually the mother, knew what was happening and didn’t report the abuse. “In every case the mother knew what was going on, but denied the whole problem.”
Once the abuse was brought to the attention of authorities, he added, many children are brought under “tremendous pressure” by the family to recant their story. They are told, “Look what’s happened . . . Daddy could go to jail . . . you will break up our family...
