peper, delivered via a carrier who made contact with the Viewtown Post Office clerk, Jim Mills.
Nearly 30 years ago, Mrs. Barron and her husband, Theodore, relocated the post office to the front of the store using materials from the old post office for installation of the new, though the mail slots and darkened pine woodwork surrounding the first post office were not removed until 1988 renovations completed by the store’s present owners.
“The old post office sat on a platform,” Mrs. Barron remembered, adding after those early renovations, the platform was kept and the area was used as office space for store and post office bookkeeping by she and her late husband.
“We wanted to keep the store as original as possible,” Mrs. Barron recalled.
“It was a stopping point, then,” Barron said with fond memories of her home and business.
Sitting high atop the hill, the store remains a stopping place for travelers, locals and business people, who look for its familiar face which has changed little since the early 1900’s when a fire razed it, forcing The Spellmans to completely rebuild the post office and store over the old foundation, visible just inches from the original front steps.
But the store has changed. Today it has new owners, Chris and-, Verna Schmitt from southern Maryland, a new look and many newJJ items.
The Schmitts spent several months completing renovations to the old store, adding many modern conveniences including a heating system, neon-bright soda coolers, a new floor, a few layers of interior paint and a new front door.
Today, as it has for years, Viewtown Store is ready for business.
Located miles from any business district of size, Viewtown store and post office, through necessity, has provided and still provides mercantile items of a varied quality.
