their scientific classification, which is animalia, chordata, mammalia', rodentia, sciuridae, marmota, monax. Clearly however, when Mr. Hawkins beholds ground hogs on his property, he sees vermin. He wants them to go away and build their five foot deep, 30-foot long burrows someplace else. But where? Mr. Hawkins does not say.

Does Mr. Hawkins wonder why, when his haveaheart traps, or his ammonia and bleach bottles didn’t work, his neighbor suggested smoke bombs? Did the neighbor perhaps know that on the few occasions when smoke bombs work, the ground hog is removed not just outside its 40 to 160-acre home range but to another world altogether?

Your regular readers doubtless know that Mr. Hawkins is quite wrong when he says that ground hogs can be hunted every day of the year. In the Commonwealth of Virginia, ground hogs are entitled to a day of peace, though not necessarily rest, on Sundays.

Ground hog meat is, according to one authority, good to eat. (Whether it should be smoked or not is not clear.) I don’t know, however, whether it is legal to eat ground hog on Sunday.

No problem for me, though. I am going to find a way to send my ground hogs over to Mr. Hawkins.
