For yean there has been a “gentlemen’s agreement” among the county’s supervisors that when appointments are made to boards and commissions by magisterial district, the members would honor the recommendation of the supervisor from that district. When elections for su(>ervisors were held, the reasoning went" the voters could consider the quality of his appointments in judging their supervisor’s performance.
That agreement broke down this spring when David Fannon’s term on the Planning Commission representing Jackson District ended April 21. At the supervisors’ meeting in March Jackson District representative Ellis Bingham nominated George Wesselhoft to represent the district. The nomination died when no other supervisor was willing to second the nomination.
“Historically it’s been a supervisor’s prerogative in his district,” Col. Bingham said at that meeting. “Does anyone have an objection to Mr. Wesselhoft?”
“I don’t know Mr. Wesselhoft,” Supervisor Chairman Hubert Gilkey replied.
At last Monday’s public hearing and work session on the school budget, Mr. Wesselhoft appeared to talk with the supervisors. He talked privately for a while with
