in only its third year, missing the playoffs by one spot is not bad,” Mrs. Leake pointed out. The Panthers split with all the district’s teams except powerhouse Page, Central and Strasburg, she added.

“It’s good to end the season on a positive note,” she added. “They are playing now the way they were capable of playing all year — but they weren’t winning, so they didn’t know how it felt. Now they know they can do it.”

With only two seniors graduating this year. Coach Leake will have much the same team returning next season, aided by another year’s strength and maturity. “The girls are working real hard — they are realizing that the girls’ programs can be winners too. That has given them a real positive attitude.”

Another boost, she said, was provided by her husband, basketball coach Gary Leake. “He told them if they win Thursday, he’ll slide into home plate head first. That was a big motivator — they really want to see that!”
