After struggling both in the field and the plate during a long spring that brought anything but a field of dreams, Rappahannock’s Panthers finally broke their losing streak with a win over George Mason last Friday, 16-9.
“It was sweet,” said Coach Dee Van Horn of the home field win. “It all came together for them.” The Panthers offense fairly roared, going 17 for 30 at the plate, while its semipro base thieves had a perfect outing, swiping seven bags in seven attempts.
Pitcher Tremayne Allsberry got the win, while reliever Philip Daczewitz earned credit for a save. “We’ve got a good group of pitchers,” Coach Van Horn said of his staff. “They give that extra effort that makes the difference.”
The Panther offense was once again led by senior Bill Atkins, who went 2-3 at the plate, including a two-run homer. Tom Brown also went 2-3, adding two RBIs.
The team ripped five doubles and one home run en route to the victory, including three off Daczewitz’s bat. The versatile senior was 3-3 at the plate against the Generals.
Exchange student Kentaro Otani was 3-4 for the day, as was catcher Keith Gore, who added three RBIs.
