Last week the Rappahannock Athletic Association began its 1990 Little League baseball season with the five Bambino Major League teams beginning action.
On Thursday, the Yankees, sponsored by Earner and Eiland Woodworking, unleashed a 12-hit attack in their season-opening 17-5 win over the Mellen Orchards Red Sox.
The Yankees took control of the game early, scoring six runs in the first inning, another two in the second and icing the victory with nine tallies in the fourth inning. Their offensive attack was led by timely hitting from Alan Groves, Donald Dorrell, Mark Jenkins and Jeff Atkins, and aided by a home run from Keith Menefee.
Clutch defensive play to maintain the advantage came from Mike Gilkey and Jeff Atkins, which helped pitcher Tim O’Meara handcuff last year’s league champion Red Sox.
