Both Mr. McAninch and Mr. LeMarr said all three pesticides are extremely safe, and should not affect people, pets or livestock. Mr. McAninch recommended that dogs be brought inside so they are not frightened by the low-flying aircraft, and Mr. LeMarr added that horses which are easily spooked should be put in a large field where they cannot hurt themselves if they run.
Laundry should not be hung out during the spraying, since the chemicals may stain clothing.
Mr. LeMarr said his company has contracts to spray between 1,000 and 1,500 acres in the county, and will be working whenever the winds and weather allow to complete the spraying. As he stood in a field in the F.T. Valley Tuesday evening, his helicopter and support truck parked nearby, several residents stopped to inquire whether he could spray their property.
“Hang a sign that says ‘No Vacancy’ on your way out,” he jokingly suggested. New Horizons has two helicopters based in Winchester which do the spraying, and he said his schedule is nearly booked. Most clients made arrangements to spray back during the winter, and “it’s first come, first serve,” he said.
This year, the caterpillars are ahea<i of schedule, Mr. LeMarr said, explaining that February’s warm spell brought them out early. Usually, the company runs its spray program from south to north, working along with the leaves. But this spring was different, he said, when they found the leaves in the Northern Piedmont farther advanced than those to the south.
The spray “window,” he said, lasts about three weeks, corresponding to the caterpillars’ growth period when they go through several enstars, or moltings. Once fully grown, he said, Bt has no effect because the insect no longer requires a npw pvnsWplptrm
