Poisson, along with Irishman Paul McCormack of Team Crest and American Todd Gogulski of Coors Light, broke from the pack at the 72mile mark, about two-thirds of the way through the 125.6 mile trek from Charlottesville. The trio put nearly 10 minutes between them and the pack before the other racers closed the gap late in the ride, cutting the breakaway riders' lead to about five minutes.
Outside Winchester, Gogulski pushed a sprint, but the other two kept stride and gradually pulled away. Gogulski then fell behind, unable to match the breakaway pace.
