Eva wandered off, has become more of a pet than a farm animal. He sits on Julia’s lap, and follows her down to the stream for a swim. When visitors come though, he lets out a loud warning, like the trumpeting of the geese that saved ancient Rome from attack by vandals.
But if the truth were out, Adam is, as geese go, somewhat overweight.
One day the wind surprised Adam. He was running down to the stream in a fast waddle with wings outstretched, when suddenly he achieved liftoff. With a full 5-foot wingspan, and legs folded under like a jumbo jet’s wheels, he flew right over Julia’s head, making a respectable two point landing 50 yards down the hill.
Little did he know that he wasn’t the first — the Wright brothers had done a similiar thing with their glider at Kitty Hawk, more than 80 years before — but for Adam it was a heady experience.
Overweight though he is, he still tries. It was one of those fluky, mountain winds that had carried him up for his first flight. Maybe it’ll happen again.
