A bad bill
State Senator Hunter Andrews of Norfolk has proposed legislation which would shift the burden for supporting the salaries of constitutional officers from the state to local governments.
Sen. Andrews’ legislation is but the latest in a continuing series of maneuvers in Richmond to shift the tax burden from the state to its localities. And, as usual, the legislation contains no suggestions or proposals for counties to pay the greatly increased costs.
Also as usual, the counties which would feel the greatest effect are the small, rural ones like Rappahannock. With limited revenue sources, the county’s residents would see their tax bills climb yet again.
Thanks to the efforts of a group of local officials, the General Assembly agreed to carry the bill over until next year’s session.
We hope that our elected representatives, Del. Andy Guest and Sen. Kevin Miller, will convince their colleagues in the General Assembly to reconsider the impact of this illconceived bill, and send it quickly into a richly-deserved oblivion next January.
