The board also saw the area proposed for a new girls’ softball field. Currently the high school girls team has practices and games at the elementary school. This has created conflicts with youth league sports for elementary students and has produced the added complication of transporting the team between schools.
The proposed area is to the right as you face the school and partly back into a wooded area. The school system is hoping for community support in making this new ballfield a reality, Mrs. Massie said.
Finally, standing beside the flagpole in front of the school, the board members heard Dr. Gangel describe a new path for routing buses to the high school once the four-laning of U.S. 211 is completed. As planned ,the project will only allow one crossover point at the high school.
Currently buses enter near the Sperryville end of the school property and exit near the Washington end through the traffic circle, which is one-way. The one crossover is planned for the Washington end. Dr. Gangel said he had met with Resident Engineer Robert Moore to discuss putting in a second crossover.
Mr. Moore said that having two crossovers so close together would create a safety hazard with vehicles accelerating and decelerating and weaving across lanes. When Dr. Gangel said the alternative was to
