Help appreciated

Thanks to the efforts of the Virginia Department of Transportation, Rappahannock County High School will soon have a new, expanded parking lot behind the school.

The department donated the use of one of its road graders and an operator to level the area where the parking lot will be built. VDOT provided the equipment and labor free of charge.

While the grader was at the school, the operator made several passes around its decrepit track, scraping away the grass which had grown into the cinders after several years of neglect.

Then came Sperryville contractor Steve Leake, who donated his time and the uise of his equipment to pick up several loads of cinders and spread them on the track, making it ready for action. He also brought in sand to refill the high jump pit and build up several low areas on the baseball field..

Next up was track coach Scott Mellott, who along with several other volunteers dragged the cinder track to pack the surface, then painted the lines by hand.

Through this team effort, combining a state agency, a private businessman and the public schools, the RCHS track team was able to host its two home meets for the first time in several years. These community-minded volunteers deserve the county’s thanks not only for their effort, but also for the spirit they displayed. They represent the best in Rappahannock County.
