To the editor:
In reference to the article on the Slate Mills bridge there are errors in your reporting that need to be corrected.
1) My house was placed on the Virginia Landmarks Register on April 17, 1990 and endorsed for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places through the normal application and evaluation procedures not by a call to the Secretary of the Department of Natural Resources. I called the secretary’s office on April 24 in order to put pressure on the Department of Historic Resources to reply to my letter of March 15 questioning the validity of their decision on the north side option. DHR had failed to reply to my letter but finally sent one out on the afternoon of the 24th after being contacted by the Secretary’s office.
2) VDOT had in fact, replied to my letter but generally in an evasive manner, at the hearing VDOT personnel did, however, answer certain points which I had raised in the letter.
3) The horse corral was built by a previous owner, not by me. Its use would be negated by road construction and VDOT/utility rights-of-way.
DHR’s letter of April 24, mentioned above, included “rationable for the lesser impact on the historic district if the north side option is exercised. It’s rubbish.
