crafts,” she said with a smile, her arm extended to her shop filled with craft items from earrings to suncatchers to quilt-pillows to santa clauses to dried flower wreaths to curio cabinets and fine pieces of pewter.
Striking the attention on the second floor is the tiny “sugar plum cottages” decorating an evergreen in the corner or sitting quite proper inside grapevine wreaths. The store’s mascot is a 12-inch-high cottage made of cardboard and twisted paper with tiny thatched roofs, dried flower trees and arrangments around the edges. The cottages - somewhat of a David Winter-style - come in a variety of color from twotoned blue to pink to green to purple to a typical brown and tan.
The “sugar plum cottages” were named after the shop opened. “I saw the design in a book,” Mrs. Armentrout said of her cottages, another of her own craft additions to the shop.
Once she decided on having a shop she searched for a name, leafing through magazines for inspiration. “I came across a plum and it stuck. I painted it on the sign out front and so, here it is,” she said with laughter, adding then, she named her cottages she so carefully placed around the shop.
“If I like something enough,” she said, fixing the arrangement of a necklace and earring set, “it’s not for sale anymore,” she said with laughter.
The Armentrouts, though they own their own home in Woodville, bought the house and the apartments nearby nearly three years ago. After renovating the apartments, they began on the house.
“It was horrible,” Mrs. Armentrout said of the house which awaited them. “Pigeons lived here. Hundreds of them. There were dead ones upstairs and baby ones and old ones. It was a mess.”
Today, with new wallboard, new wiring and a new exterior — besides an unfinished addition to house more shop space and a work area and a living quarters behind the two shop rooms — no fine feathered friends are welcome — unless dried.
“We hired someone to do the work,” she said of the finished house, a cozy two room shop painted in white. “It took about two full months,” she explained, adding while the shop is open, the work is not complete. ‘We are adding a fireplace, here,” motioning to the downstairs mantle piece.
“This shop is my hobby,” she said with a smile, adding just as the young buds of spring are growing, so is her shop.
“It’s still growing and developing,” she said with a smile.
