The Board of Zoning Appeals voted to approve Walter and Susan Longyear’s application to operate a bed and breakfast inn with up to four rooms in their house just outside Washington at its March 27 meeting.

The members noted that this makes the fifth bed and breakfast in or very near the town of Washington, not counting The Inn.

The vote was conditional on the Longyears’ getting approval from the Health Department. Susan Longyear said she had contacted the Health Department and she said they would be required to upgrade the septic system so the “graywater” goes into the septic tank or another tank. It currently runs out on the ground. She said there is no problem with the sewage handling of the septic system.

That was the only application before the BZA since Matthew Iten had withdrawn his application for an efficiency apartment following the decision of the Planning Comission to recommend that it be turned down.

County Administrator John McCarthy said he would prepare an amendment to the zoning ordinance that would stipulate that an owner could not apply for an efficiency apartment unless he was living in the main house.

Mr. McCarthy said the chief concern of the planners was that the efficiency apartment provision could be used to create a second rental on a piece of property. This was circumventing the intent of the supervisors when they
