approved the efficiency apartment provision expecting that it would be used to house employees of the property owner, Mr. McCarthy said.
The BZA members said they would support such an amendment.
Following the business portion of the meeting, StonewallHawthom District member Sid Gottlieb reported on a course for BZA members he is taking.
He said the course was very interesting and very helpful, with a lot of required reading. One session was taught by the chairman of the York County BZA, Mr. Gottlieb said. From this session, Mr. Gottlieb said he had learned that “BZA members try to be nice guys and are far too lenient.”
He said that the York County BZA turns down 83 percent of the variance requests that are brought before it. He added that the York County chairman said that five cases they had turned down involved applications for variances after the building had been built, and the judge upheld their denials in four of the five cases and the buildings were tom down.
Mr. Gottlieb mentioned several other practices of that BZA‘which help the members of uhe public in attendance at meetings to understand what is going on, but he added “the good news is that we look good compared to a lot of others.”
BZA Chairman Louis G. “Butch” Zindel took the course last year and added, “The biggest thing I learned is it’s OK to say ‘no.’”
