Williams said of early garden plantings. “There is some spinach” popping through the warming April soil as well as early peas. “If you have your peas in the ground, they are fine. If you don’t, get them in as soon as you can after the ground is dry,” Mr. Williams offered.
While many farmers and local gardeners have planted their potatoes and peas, some wait for soil to get dry enough to plant. Rushing to plant in soil too wet only tends to damage some crops.
To test soil for dryness, remove top soil with your hand. Take a clump of lower earth in your hand and make a fist. Then open your hand, if the soil falls slowly back to earth, it passes the dry test. If it reSPRING
