The first meetings were held at the county park, which offered to waive the normal fee if the Mothering Cooperative would repair some of the park’s broken equipment. The group hopes to raise money for the repair through a concert featuring Rappahannock harpist Lorraine Duisit and pianist/composer Peter Kater at 8 p.m. April 27. The concert is cosponsored by the Mothering Cooperative, the Ki Theatre and the Rappahannock Association for the Arts and the Community.
The Co-op’s events are not restricted to members, who pay $20 a year in dues, but some services, such as the newsletter, free admission to events, and loaned resource materials, are restricted.
Scheduled monthly activities include mothers’ gatherings (on the third Thursday of each month), family gatherings, experimental workshops and lectures, community outreach projects and fundraising. The group has already developed an 80-person mailing list.
The co-op’s committees “form and fold as needed,” and currently include committees on development, the newsletter, concerts, the babysitting co-op, and an educational resources panel, said Mrs. Lucking.
Mrs. Lucking said the mothers have been using their “own personal skills in helping each other.” One mother is an herbalist, another is a professional childbirth educator and a third has provided co-op members with massage lessons.
