for your pets
To the Editor:
I am writing this letter hoping to persuade pet owners in Rappahannock County to have more concern for their pets. I and my husband moved to the Chester Gap area last January and we like this area and ei\joy living here. However, in the past year we have observed numerous loose dogs and cats. Being responsible pet owners ourselves (we keep our cats inside and won’t get a dog until we have a fence installed) we find this terribly appalling.
Pets need love, caring and concern just like their human caretakers do. Dogs and cats are not selfsufficient; they need daily feeding, attention and cleaning up after. This does not mean letting your pet roam the neighborhood to:
1) Feed on and scatter your neighbors’ trash.
2) Chase and jump your neighbors in their own yard because the pet gets no attention from home.
3) Do its business in your neighbor’s yard so your neighbor has to clean it up.
Another important responsibility of being a pet owner is having your pet spayed or neutered. If these irresponsible people can’t properly care for the pets they have, it is senseless for them to have puppies and/or kittens who will obviously lead a life of abuse.
The most unfortunate thing these careless pet owners fail to realize is the possibility of their pet being hit by a car. It saddens me to see so many pets meet this fate when it could be prevented. There are many other terms I would use to describe this type of pet owner but they can’t be used in a family newspaper.
Perhaps Rappahannock County Animal Control can offer me an explanation as to why there are so many loose animals around, particularly in Chester Gap. A county ordinance requiring that pets be fenced in or chained up or else the animal will be picked up by the warden and the owner be stiffly fined might persuade some of these careless pet owners to be more concerned for their pet’s safety and their neighbors’ piece of mind.
Why not have some more concern for these animals and pass such an ordinance for Rappahannock County?
