“As a mother, you use your skills every day with your children,” said Mrs. Lucking, herself the mother of a 16-month-old daughter and a 3year-old son.
The group’s growth has surprised Mrs. Lucking. “It’s so isolated out here. Just to have someone to talk with is great.”
She pointed out that the co-op is “non-judgmental” about things like hospital birth vs. home birth.
Past workshops have included the use of herbs in combatting childhood illness, miscarriages and infertility problems.
“The first thing everybody wanted was to co-op babysitting,” she said. Member Louise Kerns coordinates the babysitting co-op and Kaye Kohler runs the babysitting directory.
Fathers are also part of the coop. Mrs. Lucking said fathers were going to participate in the Rec Center playground rehab and added that Mr. Kater “has been our only father at the mothers’ gatherings. He volunteered to be one of our two babysitters at the March gathering while the mothers listened to our lecturer upstairs. He’s a Dad who does his share of mothering.”
Mr. Kater is a internationally acclaimed pianist-composer who recently relocated to Rappahannock from Boulder, Colo. His most recent album, “Rooftops,” is on national recording sales charts and gets airtime on adult contemporary, light jazz and new-age stations.
Tickets are $9 in advance, $10 at the door and $7 to Mothering Cooperative members. They are available at Mountainside Market in Washington, the Natural Marketplace in Warrenton and Better Thymes in Front Royal.
