though they will supplement their diet with carrion. The large gray and white birds stand 24-30 inches tall and have a wing span of more than six feet. The male and female eagles weighed approximately eight and ten pounds, respectively.
The wide use of DDT throughout the United States during the 1940’s and 1950’s contaminated many food sources upon which bald eagles depended. The insecticide caused egg shell thinning in bald eagles and other birds which resulted in dramatically reduced reproduction and sharp population declines. Though the eagle has recovered somewhat in recent years, it is still listed as an endangered species.
The female was tagged and determined to have been part of a West Virginia program to re-establish bald eagles there. The birds had been seen in the F.T. Valley as recently as February.
Both private conservation organizations and law enforcement agencies are appealing to the public for assistance with the investigation of the eagle killings. Anyone with information can call the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service office in Richmond at 804-771-2481, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries at 800-237-5712 or their local game warden, who can be reached through the Sheriffs Office. .

New program
helps farmers
The Farmers’ Home Administration is launching a new program to help local farmers obtain credit from local lenders. Known as the Interest Assistance Program, it provides incentive for commercial lenders to give loans to farmers who otherwise may not qualify.
