state Democratic in a presidential race. After all, he beat Marshall Coleman by the narrowest of margins and George Bush may still be a highly popular President by the time the election rolls around. The last time Virginia went for a Democratic presidential nominee was in 1964.
Yet Wilder would undoubtedly bring a number of assets to a national ticket. As the nation’s first black governor, he has been a strong advocate of fiscally conservative policies that include a no-new-taxes pledge he has adhered to. He has been a tough law-and-order leader and is a decorated combat veteran.
All that might play well for a party whose past nominees have often been accused of being reckless spending liberals who are soft on crime and national defense.
Meanwhile, at home Wilder has demonstrated his ability to make the Democratic majority in the General Assembly follow his lead. He got nearly all he asked for from the recently concluded legislative session
