A Fredericksburg-based state trooper was hospitalized for a virus of the brain he contracted while practice-diving at a quarry on Route 650, just over the Culpeper County line from Rappahannock, according to State Police information officer Lucy Caldwell.
The trooper, Mark Berry, had been practice diving March 25 when he and Fauquier Trooper W.E. Walther began to find what turned out to be stolen guns and other items, said Ms. Caldwell.
The two returned on March 27, and between the two dives they recovered two shotguns, six rifles and five pistols. AD but one of the pistols were tied to a 1986 burglary in Silver Spring, Md., said Ms. Caldwell.
Also recovered were a fivefoot-high toolbox, a Triumph 750 Bonneville motorcycle, a minibike and a Remington typewriter. The minibike was stolen, said Ms. CaldweU, and the other items are being examined.
Trooper Berry was stricken by a germ that is sometimes found in stagnant water, said Ms. CaldweU. He was in extreme pain for several days but is expected to fuUy recover.
