During the Middle Ages throughout Europe villagers put on nativity plays during the Advent season.
Ki Theater director Julie Portman is reviving that custom in Rappahannock County. As part of Washington, Virginia’s Colonial Christmas weekend, Dec. 7 and 8, Ki Theater will present three performances of “The Shepherds’ Play.”
Few copies of these plays remain. ‘The Second Shepherds’ Play,” familiar to students of English literature, is one. The play that Ki Theater will perform was originally acted in a German dialect.
During the 1840s Karl Julius Schroer found this play being performed by the villagers of Oberufer, an island in the Danube. There were no copies of the entire play, but he found village families with treasured copies of individual parts which had been handed down for generations.
