niors: 5-8 point guard Damien Muriel, an exchange student from Argentina; and 6-3 forward Ryan Welch. Both Muriel and Welch were standouts on the boys soccer team this fall.
Another player expected to increase his production is 6-2 junior forward Michael Williams, who averaged 8.1 rebounds and 4.1 points last season.
Other juniors on the team include guard Richie Lillard, promoted to the varsity late last season; Kevin Jolliffe, a 5-10 guard; and 5-11 forward Dave Stubbs.
There are also two sophomores, both left-handed, who have made the varsity team: 5-9 guard J.C. Welch and 6-0 forward Jonathan Fletcher.
Coach Leake said the team’s impressive speed will change some of his coaching strategy. He expects more three-quarter-court presses and full-court presses on defense and he plans to count on the fast break for offensive production.
Last year the Panthers went 1210 and lost in the first round of the Bull Run District tournament. However, this season there’s not any ...single district team that stands out as being completely loaded with talent. Coach Leake said the three Shenandoah County teams—Stonewall Jackson, Strasburg and Central—all look like they could win it.
The Panthers start the year with a scrimmage at Wilson Memorial Nov. 27 and a home scrimmage against Madison Dec. 3.
