the Library Board from the Friends a few years ago, they are now public funds, separate from the county’s general fund, and the responsibility of the county government. The concern of the Library Board is that they remain earmarked only for the Library and administered by the Library Board.
The Board of Supervisors has played an increasing role in recent years in funding the Library’s operation. The present budgetary shortfall derives mostly from costs of operating a building which is more than three times as large as the previous library and much more widely used. We were unable to accurately estimate the cost of utilities that make up the major increase in expense. As we use the building we can more clearly assess the costs and learn where to economize on lighting, heat, air conditioning, and maintenance. We are finding solutions to these.
No county tax money was used in the building of the new Library. Instead, we drew upon donations, sale of Library owned real estate, gifts of land, and a federal grant.
On the whole, we appear to be in better shape than the report of the last board meeting would suggest. We will find ways to economize as we need to, and are continuing to seek additional sources. Contributions are helping to offset cuts in state allocation. And most impor
