The larger plants they are still buying from other growers include azaleas, rhodedendrons, mountain laurel, junipers, hollies and lilacs. They also have a few Japanese maples.
In the greenhouse they are growing miniature roses, herbs such as thyme, rosemary, sage, savory, basil and catnip. “I’ll try to have more exotics later,” Mr. Lockridge said. He is also experimenting with hot peppers. They are growing white marigolds and tithoniia, a short Mexican sunflower.
Mr. Lockridge is from Luray, but his wife, Cindi Jenkins, grew up in Rappahannock and graduated from the local high school. “We met at the top of the mountain, at Skyland,” he said.
