Special Olympics

at Woodberry

To the Editor:

On behalf of the Special Olympic athletes of Area 17 of Virginia Special Olympics, I would like to invite your readers to our 1993 Spring Games. The Spring Games will take place at Woodberry Forest School on Saturday, April 17, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Woodberry Forest School is on Route 15 in Madison.

Special Olympic athletes from Orange, Madison, Culpeper, and Rappahannock counties will compete in track and field events that include the 50 meter, 100 meter, 1 miles run, and the 4x4 relay. Field events include standing-long jump, runninglong jump, and softball throw. The day will also include an aapearance by Washington Redskins’ Wide Receiver Steven Hobbs, who will officiate the awards ceremony.

Special Olympics began 25 years ago with the purpose of providing an Olympic-style competition for the mentally challenged. The Special Olympic oath reads: “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me brave in the attempt.”

Please come out to cheer on these special athletes to victory, and leave with a smile on your face and a warm feeling in your heart.

Motorists at fault,

or bus drivers?

To the Editor:

A Rappahannock County School Bus Driver could have a problem on occasion with a motorist failing to stop for a bus - loading or unloading children. However, it’s hard to believe that citizens of Rappahannock County are out here to run buses on purpose. If, an fact, 8 or more people have run by school buses since January, then there is a problem!

Let’s look at the bus driver. Are they operating the bus correctly? Are they aware of the motorist approaching them from the front and rear? Are they letting the motorist know well ahead of time they have to make a stop?

I have never driven a school bus before, but I would say there is more to operating a bus then making it go and stop. You have to use a little common sense, and good judgement.

I am concemced about school bus safety, therefore I feel we have to look at this problem for both sides, the school bus driver and the motorist.
